26 August 2018 will go down as the birthday of Steeple CX events. With extraordinary support from Klein Constantia Wine Estate and RedBull we hosted an ‘invitational’ test event. The weather delivered us near authentic European conditions, complete with icy temperatures, rain, hail and wind squalls. In true CX tradition we raced.
With only a single race of mixed CX and MTB classes and all skill and fitness levels combined, it was not for the feint hearted. The course too was not a classic CX course, with a little too much climbing and some wide-eye descents, but all riders were heard whooping with delight and seen grinning from ear to ear, so clearly we were not too far off the mark.
The men’s race was contested over 5 brutal laps of 2.5km and 110m of ascent. The ladies tamed 3 laps of the same course. The racing was all out from the gun for some and a little more relaxed from others, but all were out there to soak up the CX experience.
Jarrod van den Heever emerged as the winner of the men’s race, with Luke Moir and Christoph van Heerden rounding out the men’s podium. In the ladies race Shannon van Moorst took the top step, with Luisa Malan in second and Jenni Horn in third place.
Congratulations to all who raced and thank you for being part of birthing a new cycling revolution.
