Steeple CX Cup 2019 – Round #2

9 June 2019

Held at Rondebosch Boys High School Fields

A warm but windy day greeted riders for Race #2 of the 2019 Steeple CX Cup cyclocross series.  After some rain the week leading up to the race, conditions were soft and perfect for racing.

Several new riders joined the ranks of the latest cycling revoluiton to hit South Africa. The field for the main race was our largest to date in 2019.

The pace was fast and fierce over the 2.5km course, with the leading riders completing 8 laps in the 50 minutes.

Brett Chilcott lead from the first lap and only extended his lead after every lap to claim first place in a time of 00:53:56. 2nd place went to Ryan Lenferna after a huge push in the last lap, which saw Justin Chesterton finish 3rd.  At just 15 years old, Justin is a real talent and he kept the seasoned riders on their toes and pushing throughout the race. Brett walked away with a month’s supply of Sir Juice and a case of Camelthorn beers for his effort.

In the overall series standings Ryan Lenferna moves into first place on 36 points, closely followed by Nic Lamond on 34 points and Charl Neethling occupies 3rd spot after two solid performances.  Consistency is the name of the game and with a rider’s best 5 results counting to the overall series, it is an open race this early in the season.

In the ladies Nicola Walker, ‘The Queen of Pinelands’ according to Paul Valstar on the microphone took first sport.  This format is perfect for ladies of allabilities, so we encourage them to come along and give CX a go. Nicola retains her spot at the top of the series leaderboard.

The social race, is for all those wanting to test out cyclcross racing and have some fun on a bike.  This event is attracting more new riders every time, and they also get to watch the main racing talent while enjoying all the race village and our partners RedBull, Camelthorn Beers and Sir Juice.

In this event Dominic Malan drove all the way for the win, with Yaseen Enos taking 2nd and Martin Behm rounding out the podium.  In the ladies, newby Mary Quinn took the top spot, with Nicky Mansvelt in 2nd.

Thanks to our partners and Rondebosch Boys High School for all they bring to these events.  Next race is on 30 June at the same venue.  Enter online at www.steeplecx.co.za
